The Story of YogaLife

Eighteen years of teaching authentic yoga in Rishikesh — the world capital of yoga.

Rishikesh — YogaLife shala

Our Founding

Born in the Heart of Rishikesh

YogaLife was founded in 2006 by Dr. Vikram Singh, a student of the Rishikesh Ashtanga tradition who returned to his home city after years of study under renowned masters. The name “YogaLife” — Sanskrit for “vision” or “to see clearly” — reflects the school’s core belief: that yoga, practised correctly, illuminates the nature of the self.

What began as a small shala for local students grew quickly as word spread of the school’s rigorous, lineage-based approach. By 2010 YogaLife had welcomed its first international teacher training cohort. Today the school trains hundreds of students each year from across 68 countries, many of whom return season after season to deepen their practice.

The school remains based in the Gokulam neighbourhood of Rishikesh — the same district that has been the spiritual home of Ashtanga yoga for generations. Our shala sits a short walk from the original Ashtanga institute, and we consider ourselves custodians of that living tradition.

Philosophy

Yoga as a Complete Science

We teach yoga not as exercise but as a complete technology for human flourishing — physical, mental, and spiritual. Our curriculum integrates asana, pranayama, dhyana, yoga philosophy, Ayurveda, and anatomy so that graduates leave equipped to teach and live yoga in its fullness.

We draw on the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and the Bhagavad Gita as living textbooks, reading them alongside the physical practice so that theory and embodied experience illuminate each other.

Lineage

An Unbroken Thread

The lineage at YogaLife flows from the Krishnamacharya tradition — the source of both Ashtanga and Hatha yoga as they are taught worldwide today. Our senior teachers each hold E-RYT 500 credentials and between them carry more than 150 years of combined teaching experience rooted in that tradition.
